# Raj Ghat, the memorial of Gandhi

A haven of peace amidst the noise of (https://laindiaentusmanos.com/guia-nueva-delhi/), this is how I would describe the Raj Ghat, the resting place of the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi also known as «the Father of the Nation».

## History of the Raj Ghat

The Raj Ghat which **literally means «royal courtyard »** **is the memorial in honor of leader Mahatma Gandhi**. It is **a simple black marble slab located at the exact spot where the father of the nation was cremated** on January 31, 1948, just one day after his assassination.

The Gandhi Memorial is in an open space surrounded by gardens in a sober and simple style. It is arranged with the symbol of the eternal flame and a priest ensures that this flame is never extinguished. The memorial has an epitaph with the last words pronounced by the Mahatma: «Hey Ram» which in English translates as «Oh Lord». **After his cremation the ashes were scattered in the Ganges river, but given his social importance, a part of the ashes were reserved and deposited in the marble construction**, that is to say his mausoleum.

In the Raj Ghat complex is also located the Gandhi Memorial Museum and the cremation places of other leaders or important figures of Indian society such as Jawaharlal Nehru or Indira Gandhi.

**A simple memorial that represents the essence and the purest philosophy of the father of the Nation.

## Visiting the Raj Ghat

During your visit to the complex you can visit both the memorial to Gandhi and other Indian leaders, as well as its beautiful and peaceful gardens, **a small paradise in bustling New Delhi**. If you have time, you can also take a stroll through the Gandhi Memorial Museum where you will find many personal items that the peaceful Indian leader used throughout his life. **
